Resilience is defined differently for many individuals because it takes on many forms and has various components, but most researchers agree that resilience is associated with an individual’s ability to bounce back after facing adversity. However, when faced with adversity a large percentage of clients struggle with understanding and modifying meanings attributed to their adversity. This in return affects their ability to bounce back.
The use of Cognitive Processing (CP) in treatment has proven to be an effective technique in helping clients build individual resilience. Through the use of CP, clients gain understanding of, and modify meanings attributed to their adversity. This techinque is taught in three phases which include focus on education and rapport building, formal processing of adversity and teaching of cognitive skills. Each phase will be explained in detail so that participants can apply the techniques effectively in treatment. Dr. Buckingham will share personal stories with participants to help them understand how he used Cogntive Processing to exchange a lifestyle filled with hardship, disappointment and dread to a lifestyle filled with favor, satisfaction and confidence. Participants will share personal stories and identify individuals who exemplify what it means to be resilient.
